The aims of Inspired Action are to inspire young people to volunteer, challenge perceptions of disability, and improve the accessibility of volunteer opportunities for young people – disseminating the learning from this across the voluntary sector.
Inspired Action Engagement Workers deliver inspiration workshops to young people in schools and youth clubs, enthusing them to volunteer and gathering their perceptions of volunteering. Interested young people are then invited to an induction workshop where they receive disability awareness and first aid training, find out more about the work of the British Red Cross, and consider the kind of volunteering opportunities suited to them. The Engagement Worker will assist the young people to apply for their preferred roles, whilst liaising with service managers about how best to support new young volunteers. There is funding available to support young disabled volunteers, for example providing equipment or a personal assistant.
An additional component of Inspired Action is encouraging groups of young people to develop their own ideas for time-limited social action projects in their communities, for which they can apply for funding from the project. Successful groups are supported by an Engagement Worker to realise their vision and complete their project.
