Spirit of 2012 has awarded over £900,000 to England Athletics to deliver the volunteering element of ‘Team Personal Best’ – the inspiration programme of London 2017. 

The funding was awarded in response to research commissioned by Spirit and conducted by England Athletics for a volunteering programme which aims to increase the number, diversity and skillsets of athletics volunteers.

This week saw Spirit of 2012’s £4.5 million physical activity programme, Get Out, Get Active (GOGA) officially launched in Northern Ireland. The project is happening in eighteen locations across the UK, including Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon as well as Derry City and Strabane District Council. Spirit is funding the initiative - the first of its kind on such a scale - and GOGA will support disabled and non-disabled people to enjoy being active together.

We're delighted that Spirit Board Member Paralympian Susie Rodgers, also Chair of our Spirit of Achievement Panel, has been recognised in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list, receiving an MBE for services to her sport. The award rounded off a very successful year for Susie, who won three medals at the Rio 2016 Paralympics, including gold in the women’s 50 metres butterfly.

Spirit has awarded over £900,000 to England Athletics to deliver a volunteering programme called Spirit17.

Spirit has awarded £50,000 to youth leadership organisation UpRising to develop an online mentoring platform. The pilot version is now live and currently looking to recruit mentors from Manchester, Cardiff and London.

As part of our Spirit of Women programme to mark and celebrate the centenary of women’s suffrage, Spirit of 2012 is funding several events and projects that will turn the spotlight on women and girls and address the issues that they face. 

This November sees the Fawcett Society delivering two conferences for Spirit of 2012 - in London on 12 November and Manchester on the 19th. These conferences will bring together stakeholders from a wide range of sectors to discuss barriers to gender equality, and find solutions to address the current issues faced by women and girls.

Today marks the start of the Get Out Get Active (GOGA) programme following January’s successful funding announcement. Spirit of 2012 is funding the £4.5 million initiative, which brings together 18 localities in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales and numerous national partners. In the first of its kind on such a scale, GOGA will support disabled and non-disabled people to enjoy being active together. Developed to get some of the UK's least active people moving more, GOGA will concentrate on fun and inclusive activities delivered over three-years.
